In winter, this geography creates the conditions for cold air inversions, a pattern that affects air quality in ways residents sometimes underestimate. Understanding how inversions work and what they mean for the air inside your home is worth knowing if you spend six months of the year in Pocatello with the windows shut and the furnace running.

What a Cold Air Inversion Is

Under normal atmospheric conditions, air temperature decreases with altitude. Warm air at ground level rises, taking with it pollutants and moisture, and the mixing disperses contaminants into the upper atmosphere. During a cold air inversion, this process reverses. A layer of cold, dense air settles at ground level and becomes trapped under a warmer air mass above it. The cold valley air cannot rise, so anything released into it, including woodsmoke from fireplaces, vehicle exhaust, and particulate matter from roads, stays trapped at breathing level.

How This Relates to Your Home’s HVAC

During an inversion event, outdoor air is worse than normal. Your home is not sealed from it. Most homes have air infiltration rates that exchange a significant fraction of indoor air with outdoor air over the course of a day, even when windows and doors are closed. Furnace air handling moves air through your duct system and across your filter continuously. What comes in from outside gets filtered to whatever degree your filter is capable of filtering it.

A standard 1-inch fiberglass filter has a MERV rating of about 1 to 4. It captures large particles like lint and dust mites, but it does almost nothing for fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which is the primary health concern during inversion events. Upgrading to a MERV 8 or MERV 11 filter captures a significantly higher fraction of fine particles, though higher-MERV filters also restrict airflow more and need to be checked more frequently during inversion periods when they load faster.

Woodsmoke and Indoor Air Quality

Woodsmoke is the dominant particulate source during Portneuf Valley inversions. A significant fraction of Pocatello homes still use wood-burning fireplaces or wood stoves as supplemental heat. During an inversion, using a wood-burning appliance contributes to the inversion load and brings more particulate into your own home through negative pressure effects.

When a forced-air furnace or exhaust fans in the home depressurize the interior relative to outside, the home draws in air through gaps and cracks. If you have a wood-burning appliance that is not well-sealed and the home is depressurized, combustion products can back-draft into the interior. During these months, check your furnace filter more frequently than the manufacturer’s change interval, which is calibrated to average conditions. A filter that normally runs for 90 days may need to be checked at 30 days during a sustained inversion period when particle loading is elevated. A visually loaded filter significantly restricts airflow, which reduces system efficiency and can cause the heat exchanger to overheat.
